How to Get Over Dental Anxiety

Posted .

Are you afraid of the dentist? If you are, you’re not alone. In fact, many people consider even a simple cleaning an arduous task. Sadly, some patients won’t visit the dentist until they experience an emergency such as infection or tooth decay. Waiting only leads to more problems and can ever affect overall health.

Sedation dentistry has come a long way in recent years. Currently, there are three well known types of sedation, including oral sedation for mild needs, laughing gas to address more intense issues, and IV Sedation. Typically, IV sedation is only used for those who with intense dentist anxiety or for those who need intensive care. Because each sedation method is different—with different benefits– we recommend consulting with our dentist to see which method is best for you.

Nitrous oxide is one of the most common forms of sedation, arguably because it’s safe for children and adults and because its effects wear off after only a few minutes. Similarly, administering nitrous oxide is simple—just breath normally through a mask that covers your nose.

A different sedation method is called oral sedation. If our dentist decides this method is best for you, you’ll be given a pill the night before your procedure. When you arrive at our practice the next morning, you’ll be given a second pill to help you fully relax. The downside to this option is that you won’t be able to drive home because the pills take some time to wear off. Similarly, IV sedation can be used to manage extreme cases.

With sedation dentistry, you’ll be able to treat your smile. If you’re interested in learning more about sedation dentistry, please don’t hesitate to give Artistic Dentistry a call at 949-366-1177. Dr. Amir Nikraz and our team are excited to hear from you!
