Prevent Cavities

As your child’s permanent molars and premolars emerge, it’s quite common for the biting surfaces of these teeth to be deeply textured with deep pits and fissures. A deeply textured biting surface is an evolutionary trait that helped our ancient ancestors more efficiently chew and grind tough foods. Unfortunately, residual food particles and plaque can often become trapped in these areas and encourage the formation of large cavities.

Of course large cavities, require large fillings, and large fillings on the biting surface of a tooth are more likely to cause your child problems later on in life. To help prevent this problem, the dentists at Artistic Dentistry will often recommend applying dental sealants to the biting surface of your child’s back teeth.

Dental sealants a durable plastic-resin that your dentist paints onto the biting surface of molars and premolars to protect and preserve them from the ravages of tooth decay. A special ultraviolet light is used to harden the resin. Even if plaque and food particles get stuck in the pits and fissures of the biting surface the dental sealants will keep bacteria from direct access to the tooth enamel.

At Artistic Dentistry we often apply the sealants right after your child’s regular dental checkup. The dental sealants are very durable and can help to protect the biting surface for two years or more.
